Cut to Cooper's office, where Addison is breaking the news to the O'Brien family. "Emily has a serious presentation of Pelizaeus-Merzbacher Disease," she tells them. The (still unspecified) symptoms can be treated with drugs, Cooper adds, but there's no cure, and Emily probably has about five years to live. That's the bad news. Nobody tells them the good news: they could become very well known and sought-after in the field of genetics, because according to the National Institutes of Health, Pelizaeus-Merzbacher Disease affects males almost exclusively.
